Tips for photos that get accepted

Lighting and background

Stand facing a window so light falls evenly on your face. Use a plain white or off-white wall and avoid shadows behind your head.

Expression and position

Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed. Keep your head upright and your full face visible from the top of the hair to the chin.

Glasses, hats and filters

Most agencies do not allow filters or retouching. Glasses are often not allowed in the US. Head coverings are only allowed for religious or medical reasons.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches. For online uploads the image must be square, between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, and under 240 KB.

What size is a Schengen visa photo?

35 × 45 mm, which is 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The resizing runs entirely in your browser and your photo never reaches our server.

How do I get the file under 240 KB?

Enter 240 in the maximum file size box. The tool lowers JPEG quality step by step until the file fits. If it cannot fit, it tells you.

Does this tool make a printable sheet?

Not yet. It outputs one correctly sized digital photo, which most online forms require.
